Dr. Kathryn Dobyns

Dr. Dobyns is our only full-time veterinarian.  She grew up in Frederick County, Maryland, where her parents still live.  She graduated from Middlebury College in 1990 with a degree in Biochemistry.  She worked for 1 year as a Chemist at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, MD, then entered the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine.  After graduating from Cornell in 1995, Dr. Dobyns moved to Lexington, VA, where she worked as an Associate Veterinarian for 4 years.  She then worked as a relief Veterinarian in several practices throughout the Shenandoah Valley and Charlottesville areas.  In August of 2000, she made the leap to practice ownership, purchasing the Middle River Veterinary Hospital.

In January 2018, Dr. Dobyns completed all of the requirements for the Certified Canine Fitness Trainer course through FitPaws and the University of Tennessee. She can help you develop a balanced exercise plan for your dog - plans are customized for you and your dog. Contact us for more information about Canine Fitness!

Outside of veterinary medicine, Dr. Dobyns enjoys many outdoor activities, including walking and training her dog, gardening and skiing.  Most weekends are now dedicated to various activities with her mixed breed dog, Hunter.  She and Hunter also volunteer with the Animal Assisted Therapy Program at Augusta Health.

Dr. Dobyns also shares her home with kitty Cascadilla, a former stray, who is still adjusting to the pleasures of indoor living.

Dr. Vicky Dye

Dr. Vicky Dye is our part time veterinarian on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Born in Seattle,Washington, she grew up in Northern Virginia. She graduated from Virginia Tech in 1990 with an Animal Science degree and then entered veterinary school at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, graduating in 1994.

Dr. Vicky worked as an emergency veterinarian in Charlottesville for 3 years before switching to relief veterinary work, which is how she found Middle River Veterinary Hospital in the late 1990's. Relief work allows her to spend time on her other passion - nature and wildlife photography.

Photography started as a hobby that became a business in 2003. Primarily self taught, she hopes people will appreciate and help protect our wild spaces by showing the beauty and majesty of nature in her images. She also enjoys teaching photography classes and selling her work at art shows and online at www.victoriasimages.com.

Dr. Vicky lives with her husband Harvey, several beautiful cats and many fish in Charlottesville. Her other main hobby is participating in 16th century Elizabethan England re-enacting. Her group often volunteers at Jamestown Fort and demonstrates arts and crafts from the period. Dr. Vicky loves creating embroidery from that period while her husband does woodworking.
